I've made a new Twitter account for art! It's Sludgetown.

My other Twitter accounts will still be Inskora (games, tech, astronomy) and Korodera (personal).

My art Tumblr, bob-todd, will remain up but will probably not be updated any more. I will still go on Tumblr to see my friends' posts and to check my messages, but I no longer want to use it as my main platform for anything.

This means that I'm going to greatly relax my stance against reposting my art. Since I probably won't be posting my new art to Tumblr any more, you can repost it there as long as you give credit properly. Please link back to my site (bobtodd.info) or dA profile (linking to my site is preferred). If it's an older piece that I previously posted on Tumblr, I would much prefer you reblogged from me rather than reposting. However, since I'll be on Tumblr less I won't care as much as I used to.
I decided to make a little website for Clashcradyne (my headworld), because information about it is scattered over dA, Tumblr and bobtodd.info. From now on this will be a central repository.

clashcradyne.bobtodd.info

It's still unfinished; I just threw this together today. Please feel free to look around at what's there. At the time of writing, the species pages for ontos, agriltheans and rathameldhontel are up, as well as character pages for Murgatranthes and Varin. There probably isn't any info on them you haven't already seen if you follow me here or on Tumblr - at present I'm mostly looking for feedback on the site design. If you think it's bad or unreadable or looks weird on your screen, I'd love to know.
(If you've been pinged in this and you don't follow me, it just means I dig one of your designs.)

I was tagged by Otterwillow!

1. Your first OC ever?
My first OC not based on an existing universe was a hyena monster called Middlesboogie. She was a large cobalt-blue spotted hyena with a spiky magenta haircut, a mane made of blue flames, pupil-less white eyes, hands that constantly dripped blood, and skeleton feet with wheels like roller-skates. She was a sparkledog (well, hyenas aren't dogs) before sparkledogs were a thing.

2. Do you have a personal favourite among your OCs?
Silrathus is my favourite (don't tell Murgatranthes). When I'm stressed I sometimes have dreams about Silrathus appearing and helping me through my troubles.

3. Have you ever adopted a character or gotten a character from someone else?
I've bought adoptables but I've never really done anything with them, unfortunately. I've also paid a couple of artists to design a rathameldhontel each (one of my original species) but I still haven't got round to doing anything with the designs they made. (I love them though!)

4. A character you rarely talk about?
I have loads of ontos characters who technically still exist but I haven't drawn in years. The most notable of these is probably Ialthius. He was actually the second ontos I came up with (which might be surprising, as you'd expect it to be Silrathus) and is Murgatranthes' former boss.

5. If you could make only one of your OCs popular/known, who would it be?
I think Varin because its mask has a non-fixed design and it's a squishy tentacle monster, so I'd like to see what people came up with.

6. Two OCs of yours that look alike despite not being related?
I try to keep all mine distinguishable!

7. Are your OCs part of any story or stories?
There is an underlying universe tying together all my demon OCs, but I haven't written any stories about it. I don't really want to - creating the universe is the creative exercise for me rather than it being a backdrop for stories.

8. Do you RP as any of your OCs? If you do, introduce one of your RP OCs here!
I have an RP twitter for Murgatranthes but that's it. I'd like to do some RP on my lewd art blog but no-one reads that and I'd probably be too shy to anyway.

9. Would you ever be willing to give any of your OCs to someone else?
I'd rather people just made their own. You're free to make your own ontos, rathameldhontel, agrilthean or cromnar. (Though at present I've made a species ref only for the ontos, so maybe hold off on the others until I've got their refs made.)

10. Introduce an OC with a complicated design?
The agriltheans (Varin and Melmarus) probably have the most complicated designs. But I'd like to think they aren't so much complex as having many parts. They have a fixed number of limbs but apart from that you can get quite creative with them.

11. Is there any OC of yours you could describe as a "sunshine"?
I'm not sure what this means. If it means nicest, Serick and Melmarus might qualify. Melmarus is very patient and caring (to the extent that she can be overbearing and you might need to ask her to lay off a bit). Phelmarith is a friendly and gentle demon too but will snap if anyone takes advantage of his kindness.

12. Name an OC that isn't yours but who you like a lot.
Some of my favourites are bestiaexmachina's Cibex (cybernetic catgoat), exquisitedecay's Lorrimor (lionfish dragon monster), blinkpen's King Gelatinous (adorable gel dragon who barfs healing slime), VCR-WOLFE's King [various] (tripartate lich dragon), Spoonfayse's Fleshstrip (literally a flesh strip. I felt a bit bad picking this one when the artist has so many great humanoid characters but I love this little one's design so much) and DimeSpin's Hearth (composite cat monster/homunculus collective).

13. Do you have any troublemaker OCs?
Silrathus likes to put in wrong numbers in your half-finished sudoku while you're in the loo.

14. Introduce an OC with a tragic backstory.
Irus has a fear of humans after their first experience of being summoned was being used as a pit-fighter by some cultists who found it entertaining to watch demon fights. Although they were able to escape under their own power (and kill a lot of the cultists for their impudence), they're afraid of that happening again. Irus keeps a bodyguard and a bunch of anti-summoning charms with them. It's probably unnecessary - it's much harder nowadays to summon a demon who doesn't want to be summoned - but it makes them feel better.

15. Do you like to talk about your OCs with other people?
Definitely! I love getting questions about them.

16. Which one of your OCs would be the best at biology (school subject)?
Niemnus or Phelmarith. They're both professional healers.

17. Any OC OTPs?
I'm not sure what this means - doesn't otp refer to fictional characters that aren't yours? If this means which pair my characters has the deepest bond, that's probably Serick and Melmarus. They adore each other and are very devoted.

18. Any OC crackships?
The most unsuitable canon pairing is Irus and Hargeitrul. Irus was a wealthy trader and Hargeitrul an aristocrat with a hereditary rank but not much wealth. A marriage was mutually beneficial (giving Irus status and Hargeitrul wealth), so they agreed to it. They are both avaricious, demanding, entitled and basically smug irritating gits, and are constantly at each other's throats. They are fond of each other in a way - they dream of killing each other but would never dream of separating (kind of like Britain and France). They don't grok how to be affectionate for its own sake, and will instead snap at each other and then apologise as a way of bonding.

Murgatranthes x Phelmarith is non-canon but I quite like thinking about it. They might have been together in another universe.

19. Introduce an OC that means a lot to you (and explain why).
Phelmarith came to me in a dream. He was already fully-formed and I barely needed to change his design at all when drawing him. All I had to do was think of a name. There's another reason Phelmarith means a lot to me but I don't really want to say why here.

Silrathus means a lot to me too for the reason stated in question 2.

21. Your most artistic OC.
Silrathus is actually an artist by trade. She's a gemcutter and she designs and makes jewellery.

22. Is there any OC of yours people tend to mischaracterise? If yes, how?
I was quite surprised by people calling Varin 'he' when it's a tentacled monstrosity with no obvious gender markers and I'd only referred to it as an 'it'. I guess everything is assumed to be 'he' by default. (In the end I gave in and even I sometimes call Varin 'he' now.)

23. Introduce OC that has changed from your first idea concerning what the character would be like?
I created Murgatranthes in 2005, when I was 19. She's changed a lot since then - the character tropes I thought were coolest when I was 19 are different from the ones I think so at 29. Plus I've become a lot more self-indulgent with my character designs now. I design what I think is nice rather than what I think looks generically 'cool'.
Here's Murgatranthes earliest and most recent refs for comparison. Her personality has also pretty much done a 180 - she used to mostly have Phelmarith's current personality but is now a lot ruder and selfish.

24. If you could meet one OC of yours, who would it be and why?
I'm having a hard time choosing between Murgatranthes, Silrathus, Serick, Melmarus and Phelmarith. I'd probably choose Murgatranthes because she enjoys having a fuss made of her and I'd certainly be happy to do that for her. I could help her make some additions to her collection of human artefacts too.

25. The OC that resembles you the most (same hobby, height, shared like/dislike for something etc?)
I think all my OCs have a little something in common with me. They weren't specifically created to represent aspects of my personality but they probably do. I have some actual self-insert characters (the crocodile in Clashcradyne, Ghisann (badger fursona) and Bob (Turbo FAST self)) but I think the question is referring to OCs that aren't meant to be yourself.

26. Have you ever had to change your OC's design or something else about them against your will?
I'm not sure this exactly applies, but I changed the number of Phelmarith's head spines from 8 to 6 because people kept forgetting to draw the smallest innermost pair. It was easier to just make that canon. I was happy to do it because it made it easier for me too!

27. Any OCs that were inspired by a certain song?
No. I don't even have playlists for my OCs (I love the idea but have no inspiration for it).

28. Your most dangerous OC?
Probably Serick. She is immensely strong and could chuck a fridge at you. It's a bit of a moot point, though - most of my OCs are demons, and Serick can't make you any deader than the others can. Irus and Hargeitrul have more power to have you killed, though.

29. Which one of your OCs would go investigate an abandoned house at night without telling anyone they're going?
Melmarus. She's probably scarier than anything inside the house.

30. Which one of your OCs would most likely have a secret stuffed animal collection?
Murgatranthes probably has a few because she collects human things. But it's not a secret.

31. Pick one OC of yours and explain what their tumblr blog would be like (what they reblog, layout, anything really)
I actually already have aesthetic blogs for Murgatranthes, Silrathus and Phelmarith (tumblr urls are their names if you're curious). The layouts are all the same because the blogs aren't supposed to 'really' be curated by the characters, they're curated by me and are collections of things that remind me of the characters or I think would be their jam. It's as though they're mentally looking over my shoulder while I'm browsing tumblr and they occasionally say 'put that one on my blog, would you?' They have no interest in designing the blog layouts or anything themselves.

32. Which one of your OCs would be the most suitable horror game protagonist and why?
I don't play horror games so I don't really know. Closest thing I've played to a horror game is probably the original Devil May Cry, and even that's pretty camp.

33. Your shyest OC?
Varin, for sure. Most agriltheans are powerful mages but Varin's magic is weak. It feels a lot braver when its beloved Krog is around.

34. Do you have any twin characters?
Silrathus and Borog, sort of.
When ontos lay more than one egg at a time (unusual), the stronger egg will absorb the weaker. (That's the tl;dr version. For the full information on ontos eggs, see here.) If the parents wish to raise both eggs, they must be kept far apart. Silrathus' parents laid two eggs, and left them both next to each other, happy to leave one of them to become sustenance for the other. For some reason, that didn't happen. One of the eggs was obviously stronger, but it left its sibling unharmed. Their parents were puzzled, but decided to not intervene and to just leave the eggs to see what would happen. The stronger egg eventually hatched into Silrathus, and the other egg stayed unhatched. The parents assumed the egg's occupant had died and the shell was stuck on autopilot, continuing to absorb nutrients even though there was nothing to direct them to. Even odder, little Silrathus hissed at anyone who attempted to remove the egg, and didn't like being taken too far away from it. After nearly a year, the small weak egg hatched, to its parents surprise. Though a little smaller than average, the hatchling appeared to be perfectly healthy, and the parents decided that it must have survived for a reason. Silrathus and Borog are twins in that they technically came from the same clutch, but they have a year between them.

35. Any sibling characters?
Yes. Niemnus, Borog and Silrathus are siblings (Niemnus is the eldest). Phelmarith has a sister called Phelmarog ('phel' is actually a title; their parents didn't hate them). Ialthius has four siblings and Varin two, but I haven't designed any of them.

36. Do you have OC pairs where the other part belongs to someone else (siblings, lovers, friends etc)?
Yes - exquisitedecay's Laeki is an ontos who is friends with Murgatranthes. So are her Lava Dude and my Silrathus, but I don't think either of us have drawn them interacting (I should do that sometime!)

37. Introduce an OC who is not quite human.
I don't have any OCs who are human!

38. Which one of your OCs would be the best dancer?
I really have no idea.

39. Introduce any character you want.
Silrathus' parents are Agrus (short for Apagrathus) and Osmus. Osmus is... not dead, but not really there either. He was 'killed' by a wizard but it didn't quite work and now he just has no physical form. He 'lives' in a phylactery that Agrus keeps around her neck. (He lived in the dead wizard's body for a while, but it decayed.) He can possess Agrus (with her permission) to share her body and have a physical form.

40. Any fond memories linked to your characters? Feel free to share!
Murgatranthes' design was inspired by some of my favourite games, so she sometimes reminds me of those games a little.

41. Has anyone drawn fanart of your OCs? If yes, maybe show a picture or two here (remember sources & permissions!)
Check the Gallery of Hoorj!

42. Which one of your OCs would be the most interested in Greek gods?
This is an oddly specific question.

43. Do you have any certain type when you create your OCs? Do you tend to favour some certain traits or looks? It's time to confess.
I think everyone can tell I like cutely rotund bellies as a design trait. Even characters I originally created to be slim have them now. They've all had chub creep. I like big noses too - most of my characters have noses you could jam your thumb inside.

44. Something you like about your OCs in general.
I like how comfortingly self-indulgent they are. I made them for me to enjoy.

45. A character you no longer use?
Krog's and Varin's earliest incarnations were called Luguanthus and Arganthas. I never really cared for their names, designs or personalities so I ended up scrapping and rebooting them completely. I also scrapped Seltra (an early ontos, the fourth I created) and folded the best parts of her design into Borog.

46. Has anyone ever told you that you treat your OCs badly?
No. Someone once told me that there is 'unresolved sexual tension' in my pictures, which is as close as it ever got, I guess.

47. Has anyone ever (friendly) claimed any of your OCs as their child?
Nothing that specific, just admiring comments.

48. OC who is a perfect cinnamon roll, too good for this world, too pure.
None of mine are perfectly innocent and pure, but Phelmarith is probably the closest. He heals anyone who needs it and can pay. If you can't pay now, he'll still heal you now and let you pay him later. If you're really super poor he'll do it for free (well, more like infinite deferment. If you do become rich he'll want you to pay him then, or if you become in a position to do him a favour he'll call it in).

49. Which one of your OCs would most likely enjoy memes.
Bob, because she lives in the Turbo FAST universe, which is already memetic.

50. Give me the good ol' OC talk here. Talk about anything you want.
I'm tagging anyone who wants to do this! Just say I tagged you if you want.
Never taken part in this before, but I'd like to. Please feel free to ask me any questions you might have about my headworld and its species and characters!
I love Wildstar Online! But it feels pretty dead (so much so that there's just one PvE server and one PvP server - there used to be several but the devs merged them so players might actually have a chance of encountering each other), and I'm kind of shy about talking to anyone there whom I don't know already because I played WoW for a few years and holy hell is that community rude and toxic.

I love it because it's just plain so much fun and it feels as though the devs thought of everything. It had things in it from launch/from very early on that WoW players had been clamouring for for years: customisable mounts, colour blind mode, player housing - oh god the player housing is incredible. It's so super customisable. I've only had this game a few months but I've got more enjoyment out of it than I did in all the years I had WoW. It's not perfect (there are a few bits that are supposed to be funny but just make me peer over the top of my glasses disapprovingly) but it's still pretty great, and the devs seem really engaged with their fanbase.

I'm on the EU Jabbit (PvE) server on Dominion side. My main is a Chua engineer called Nimba Rokk. I have a Draken stalker alt called Krutor Bonecracker but I don't play with her nearly as often.
I was thinking of making another account for stuff that isn't art but can be used by others. On my old account, BobTodd, I used to post a lot of high-res photos of animals for people to use as stock. Some people even did so, and it was nice seeing what they created! I quite want to do that again. Almost all the textures I use in my illustrations are by me too, and I'd be happy to make those available as well. If people were interested, I could post my linearts for people to practice colouring, and my .xcf files for people to pick apart.

If I do this, should I do it on my current account, or make a new alt account? Having all my stuff in one place sounds good in its own way, but I'm more drawn to the idea of having separate accounts. People who watch me for my art might not want to get a bunch of textures and things in their inboxes, and it would also spare me from losing the favs/comments on my actual art amongst a deluge of notifications for my stock. I might also use this potential new account for things like dA stamps, as those aren't really art either.

Let me know if you have any thoughts!
I just wanted to get that huge long FAQ off my page. Pinball Arcade is great and you should play it so I have more people to talk to about it. My favourite tables are Monster Bash and Cirqus Voltaire. What are yours?

Clashcradyne

Don't forget to check the Clashcradyne lorebook for species primers and ref sheets. The answer to your question might already be in there!

What is Clashcradyne?
It's the name for my demon-occupied headworld, and is what 95% of my illustrated art is about.

What does 'Clashcradyne' mean?
It doesn't mean anything, I just thought it sounded cool. (The -dyne suffix is a nod to SMT games, which are among my favourites and are a source of inspiration.) The word is an umbrella term for referring to all aspects of my main headworld and it doesn't actually exist in-universe.

In brief, what's the concept?
Clashcradyne is an AU (or three, in a sense). In this setting, there are three universes: human (plus any extraterrestrials sharing it with us), fae, infernal. Travel is possible between the three universes.

All three universes contain magic. The reason our universe has apparently no magic is that it is vast. The magic is spread so thinly it's unusable. The fae and infernal universes are tiny enough that magic is dense enough to exploit as an energy source.

The enemies of demons are not the angels (angels are simply demons with good PR). The enemies of the demons are the fae. Humans are overall neutral in this conflict, though there are of course humans who make deals with one side or another. Demons allow themselves to be summoned by humans on condition that the humans help them if the demon world ever goes to war again.

What's the difference between a demon and a fairy?
To the casual observer, perhaps not much. (Clashcradyne fae are not the Victorian/Disneyfied version of fairies - they are the eldritch and heartless monstrosities from older folklore.) You can form contracts with both (not at the same time; that won't end well), both will probably find it funny to trick you, and both will probably exploit any loopholes possible in your contract. The main difference is that demons can be summoned by humans thanks to an old pact between the two worlds. Most humans have forgotten but demons have not. Plus, demons are mostly flesh-and-blood creatures with fixed forms, whereas fae are more unbound and changing.

Dragons were originally infernal but defected to the world of the fae.

When is Clashcradyne set?
Now. The Earth part is mostly the same as real life but with a few divergences from real history.

May I design my own ontos/agrilthean/cromnar/rathameldhontel?
Yes; they're open species. But I don't have any up to date species references yet for the last three, so maybe hold off until I get those ready, please?

What's the difference between an ontos and a pedre-ontos?
A retcon.

When I first created Murgatranthes, Silrathus et al, they had a different design and 'pedre-ontos' was their species name. An individual was an 'ontos'. In 2012 I changed their design and their terminology: the species name is now 'ontos', and it's the same in singular and plural. 'Pedre-ontos' is now the name of the ancestral species from which modern ontos evolved in-universe.

Characters

How do you pronounce Murgatranthes?
Like 'burger-van', 'trees'.

How do you pronounce Serick's full name?
Pretty much how it's spelled. I'll break it into syllables:
Hex-trel-af-tron-ite Ser-ick-te-ruft-rug Tor-gen-or-i-el. (hard g)

Can I draw gift art/fan art of your characters?
Yes! But if you wanted to draw something NSFW please discuss that with me first. I don't want to receive that as a surprise.

Can I draw our characters interacting?
Yes, see above.

Can I ship our characters together?
If it's just for a non-canon jokey picture, sure. It's unlikely I will accept anything as canon unless we're friends and the characters are a realistic match. AUs are somewhere in the middle - use common sense and discuss it with me.

Art

Can I use your art?
I encourage it. If I drew something for you, you can do whatever you want with it. Otherwise, you can use my art for anything non-commercial with proper credit and linkage.

Exceptions:
  • If it's an artwork depicting someone else's personal character, you'll have to get permission from the owner too.
  • You are not permitted to use my work on the banned sites listed below.
  • Things like hate speech obviously aren't allowed - hopefully this doesn't need to be said.
Can I repost your art on Tumblr?
Have a look on my Tumblr first to see if it's already there (which it probably will be if I posted it here before November 2015), and reblog it from me instead. If you're having trouble finding the correct post to reblog, just ask me.

Can I remix/edit/redraw your art?
Yes, if it's for non-commercial purposes and you credit me as the original creator, link back to me and make it clear the art's been edited by someone else. If you want, you can message me for the lineart of any of my digital pieces.

Exceptions:
  • If it's an artwork depicting someone else's personal character, you'll have to get permission from the owner too.
  • You are not permitted to use my work or upload your remixes of it to the banned sites listed below.
  • Things like hate speech obviously aren't allowed - hopefully this doesn't need to be said.
Do you do requests?
Not really. I may consider requests for my own characters ('I haven't seen character X in a while, do you think you will draw them again?' 'Can we see more of characters A and B interacting?' etc.) but there are no guarantees. I probably won't accommodate requests to draw your OC or licensed characters.

Do you do art trades?
With friends, yes - or at least people who aren't complete strangers. It's unlikely I'll follow up on a request if it's your first ever interaction with me. Stick around and chat to me a bit first.

I am happy to consider:
  • Straight picture-for-picture trades
  • Trades where we redraw an old piece of each other's art
  • Design trades
  • Trades where we draw lineart for the other person to colour
  • 3-people trades where we draw a sketch, pass it on, draw lineart for the sketch we receive, pass it on, then colour in the lineart we receive
Do you do commissions?
No - one of the reasons I enjoy art is that I can draw whatever and whenever I want to. Being obliged to draw something would kill my interest in it.

I spotted something a bit off. May I redline it?
Yes, but I'd prefer you only did it for new pieces (for old pieces there's not much point) and refrained doing it to gift art I've made for others.

Will you redline my work?
I'd be happy to. Just bear in mind that I don't have any art qualifications and my skill level is just what you see in my gallery.

The artist

What can I call you?

Anna, Todd or Inskora. Please don't call me Sludge or Sludgetown!

What are your pronouns?
She/her for me as a person, she/her or it/its for my fursonas.

What are some other sites you're on?
Art site: BobTodd.INFO
Main site: toddmonotony.com

Art tumblr: bobtodd (mostly just an archive now)
Art twitter: sludgetown
Personal twitter: korodera
Gaming/tech twitter: inskora

Do you IM?
Not really. I quite like using IM but I can never be bothered to sign in to all these various apps and keep track of who uses what.

I hang out a lot in an irc channel called #bibeogaem on server irc.foonetic.net. Feel free to hop on and say hi to me and my pals, and you can IM me via PM as well. Please consider not joining the channel if you're a minor - it's a very informal channel that often gets sweary and I don't want you to do anything that'll make your parents angry with me.

Do you RP?
There's an in-character twitter for Murgatranthes, but that's about it.

Why do you like demons so much?
Because they're not real and they can't get me.
content warning: rape mentions

A while back, I commissioned someone to draw Varin, and the artist uploaded the finished piece to dA. Of course, I looked at the comments - I investigate every upload and reblog of art made by and for me because I want to see what people say about it. (I kind of hope I never get popular enough that I don't have time to look at every single Tumblr reblog and read the tags.)

Someone commented on the piece with a 'lol hentai'-type comment, and the thoughtlessness of it is really bothering me. The comment was an obvious reference to tentacle rape, and I really do not appreciate having my creations associated with that sort of comment (plus I just hate rape jokes at any time anyway). It's really presumptuous of you to say 'I know where this is going'. You don't. It reminds me of shitty roleplayers power-playing.

I can't do anything about that comment because it's not my page. But for future reference, commenting with hentai jokes on my page or my pictures of my tentacled characters will get you blocked.
and I'll reply with a related fact about one of mine.
If I like it, I'll make it canon.
